Spec sheets are written to sell machines, not to help you choose one. After fitting out a few thousand desks, we have a fairly clear picture of what actually matters — and it is usually not the thing the salesperson leads with.
RAM matters more than the processor for most people
If your day involves thirty browser tabs, Excel, Teams and a PDF reader all at once, you are far more likely to be waiting on memory than on the CPU. An i5 with 16GB will feel noticeably faster than an i7 with 8GB for that workload, and it usually costs less.

Storage: capacity is the easy part
The important question is not how many gigabytes but what kind. An NVMe SSD boots in seconds and opens applications almost instantly; a mechanical hard drive will make an otherwise excellent machine feel broken. Never accept a laptop with a spinning drive as the boot disk, whatever the price.
For capacity: 256GB is workable if you live in the cloud, 512GB is the sensible default, and 1TB is worth it if you handle video, large design files or local databases.
Processors, briefly
- Core i3 / Ryzen 3 — genuinely fine for browsing, documents and video calls. Do not pay more if this is your work.
- Core i5 / Ryzen 5 — the sweet spot. Handles almost all office and professional workloads comfortably.
- Core i7 / Ryzen 7 — worth it for sustained heavy work: video encoding, large compiles, complex models.
- Core i9 / Ryzen 9 — specialist territory. If you are not certain you need it, you do not.
- Apple M-series — exceptional performance per watt. Excellent for creative work and remarkable battery life.
The display is where you will spend your day
This is the specification people cut first and regret most. Full HD (1920x1080) is the minimum for comfortable work. An IPS panel gives you usable viewing angles and consistent colour. If you work near a window, look for 300 nits of brightness or more — a dim screen in a bright room is genuinely miserable.
For anyone doing colour-critical work — design, photography, video — ask about sRGB coverage. Anything under 95% will cause you problems at the worst possible moment.
Graphics: only if you need them
Integrated graphics on modern chips handle multiple monitors, video calls and 4K playback without complaint. You need a dedicated GPU for gaming, 3D modelling, video editing and machine learning — and for very little else. A discrete GPU adds weight, heat, fan noise and cost, so do not buy one out of vague ambition.
The three things nobody puts on the spec sheet
- Keyboard quality — you will type millions of characters on it. Try before committing where you can.
- Port selection — if you need HDMI and USB-A daily, a laptop with two USB-C ports means carrying a dongle forever.
- Weight — 1.3kg and 2.4kg feel very different by the end of a commute across Mumbai.
